Landfill Permits
The New Mexico Environment Department issues permits for new landfills and also renews landfill permits on a regular basis. It takes about a year for a permit to be approved. There are fees involved, although critics say the fees are too low to cover the costs of permitting and regulating landfills. There is also a public hearing requirement in the landfill permitting process.

In 1997, eight new facilities were permitted (five landfills, one modification, one recycling facility and one composting facility).
