Not in my Backyard
Landfill Costs
New landfill regulations have made the landfill business very expensive. The liners, leachate systems, groundwater and methane wells, gas emission systems and specialized caps costs millions of dollars. Those developments have lead to higher waste collection fees for all of us. And they have left cities pondering how to find the cheapest way to get rid of trash. They also face potential costs to clean up any problems that might be discovered in old, closed landfills. This has led to the development of regional landfills, as mentioned earlier. But now, the state is encouraging some small towns to operate their own small landfills. If they accept less the 20 tons of garbage a day, they are not required to live up to the expensive new laws, and they do not face higher transportation charges.
