Tortugas Pueblo
The pilgrimage with the oldest history in New Mexico takes place during a three-day celebration, called a Triduum, for the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe in the Tortugas community south of Las Cruces. A newspaper account from December 1872 mentions this event but there is abundant evidence that the people of the Mesilla Valley first honored the Dark Virgin not long after its settlement in the 1840's. The Tortugas events draw heavily on the traditions, reaching deep into Pueblo Indian culture and Mesoamerican Ciudad Juarez.Source:
