Senators Want Expanded Hours For Santa Teresa Port Of Entry

New Mexico's U.S. senators are asking the federal government for 24-hour daily operation of a port entry at Santa Teresa along the international border with Mexico.

Sens. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich requested the expanded hours of operation Friday in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

Commercial traffic currently can use the border crossing from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. The port is open daily for non-commercial users from 6 a.m. to midnight.

Attempted Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested In Las Cruces

  A man suspected of pulling a gun on a 17-year-old boy and demanding personal property has been arrested for the attempted armed robbery.

Bobby Ray Perea, 21, of the 2100 block of Lester Avenue, is charged with one count each of attempting to commit armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and intention child abuse.

Las Cruces Burn Ban In Effect Tuesday

The Las Cruces Fire Department has issued an open burning ban within the city limits effective Tuesday, May 28, 2013.

Southern New Mexico, to include the City of Las Cruces, is experiencing severe to extreme drought conditions as indicated by the National Weather Service. Such conditions pose a fire hazard and a significant threat to the health, safety and welfare of the residents of the city.

The Las Cruces Fire Department has determined that it is necessary to restrict open burning within the municipal boundaries.

Spaceport Tour Company Moves To Elephant Butte Location

ELEPHANT BUTTE, NM - In their search for a more suitable location to further efforts related to Spaceport America, Follow the Sun Inc./FTS Tours - the official Spaceport tour operator - has relocated to a 5,800 sq. ft. building on one acre in Elephant Butte, New Mexico, where the company will launch its Spaceport America tours and rent out space to national and international space-industry companies interested in relocation.

Men Honored For Stopping ABQ Church Stabbing

Five men have been honored by the city of Albuquerque for helping stop an assailant during a stabbing attack at a Catholic church.

The men were recognized Friday for their efforts last month in holding down a 24-year-old man who authorities say stabbed three people at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church at the end of Mass.

A grand jury indicted Lawrence Capener this month on attempted murder, aggravated assault and three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon

Las Cruces Police Issue Over 200 Tickets

Las Cruces Police issued 201 citations this week during three traffic operations along Bataan Memorial West.

The three traffic operations were conducted along Bataan Memorial West near Del Rey Boulevard. The operations were held in two-hour increments beginning at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, 8 a.m. on Wednesday and 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

NMSU Creates Position For Wildland Fire Specialist

New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service has created a new position for a wildland fire management specialist.

NMSU is one of only two land-grant universities in the U.S. to create this type of position. The University of Hawaii was the forerunner in developing such a position.

NMSU officials say that after back-to-back record-breaking fire seasons in New Mexico, natural resource managers are facing significant challenges in fire-damaged areas. That includes massive erosion events.

New Mexico Police Plan Seat Belt, DWI Crackdown

Law enforcement is launching a summer campaign to crack down on drunken drivers and motorists not wearing seat belts.

Gov. Susana Martinez and other officials announced the enforcement blitz Thursday as New Mexicans prepared for the Memorial Day weekend that starts the summer travel season.

Police plan increased patrols to look for drivers and passengers without seatbelts. There will be checkpoints to catch drunken drivers.

NM Media Group Helping Uganda Journalists

A New Mexico-based media advocacy group is helping journalists in Uganda facing a government shutdown of printing and broadcasting outlets.

The Media Literacy Project is giving Ugandan journalists advice and assisting in spreading information about the latest government seizures of newsrooms by government officials.

Andrea Quijada, the group's executive director, recently visited Uganda to train journalists and help with media literacy in the African country. Quijada also met with journalists at KFM, a recently-seized radio station.
