Heinrich Co-sponsors Employment Non-Discrimination Act

U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) has co-sponsored the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), a bill to prohibit job discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. 

"Discrimination is unacceptable and has no place in the workplace," said Sen. Heinrich. "The LGBT community in New Mexico and across the country shouldn't fear harassment at work, or risk losing their jobs simply because of who they are or who they love. I was a proud cosponsor of EDNA in the House, and I will continue to support it in the United States Senate."

WNMU Names New Provost

  Silver City, NM – Dr. William Crocker, most recently the Vice-President of Academic Quality and Success at State College of Florida,Manatee-Sarasota, has been selected as the new vice president for academic affairs and provost at Western New Mexico University.

Crocker’s appointment is effective July 1. As vice president and provost, Crocker serves as WNMU’s chief academic officer, reports to the university president and acts as chief executive officer in the absence of the president.

A Celtic Circle: Terry Kay Gilbert talks about the Mesilla Valley Teen Singers

Terry Kay Gilbert, founder and director of Mesilla Valley Teen Singers.

Terry Kay Gilbert saw a need for a high-school age choir in Las Cruces, so eight years ago she started one -- the Mesilla Valley Teen Singers. The ensemble has grown from its original size of seven singers to almost 50, and includes students from several area high schools as well as home-schoolers. She came to the studios of KRWG to talk with Intermezzo host Leora Zeitlin about their spring Celtic music concert, and the gratification she gets from leading teens into the world of music.

Memorial Service Set For Five Fort Bliss Soldiers

A memorial service will be held this month at a West Texas post for five soldiers killed in a bombing in Afghanistan.

Officials at Fort Bliss say a service has been scheduled May 22 at the post chapel.

The five Fort Bliss soldiers died May 4 in Maiwand, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when an improvised bomb damaged their vehicle.

NM To Open New Juvenile Center Near Fort Stanton

Gov. Susana Martinez's administration plans to open a new juvenile detention center in southern New Mexico.

A spokesman for the Children, Youth and Families Department said Tuesday the juvenile center near Fort Stanton should open in October and will be at the location of the former Camp Sierra Blanca, a state facility for juvenile offenders that was closed four years ago.

A budget measure signed into law by the governor provided $900,000 for improvements to juvenile facilities in Albuquerque and at Fort Stanton, which is northeast of Ruidoso in Lincoln County.

Texas School Leaders Seek Expanded Federal Review

The Texas Education Agency has asked federal officials to widen a school testing scandal investigation to include two more West Texas districts.

The El Paso Times reported Wednesday that the TEA request targets the San Elizario and Canutillo school districts.

Reviews have found alleged student-record manipulation in the El Paso, Canutillo and San Elizario districts. A state-appointed board created to manage the El Paso Independent School District amid the cheating scandal held its first meeting Tuesday.

Changes in the healthcare landscape have created a challenge for rural hospitals across New Mexico, and to a varying degree, throughout the country. The challenges include the growing shift from inpatient care to outpatient care coupled with the extreme reduced payment reimbursements currently adopted and proposed by Medicare, Medicaid and the State Sole Community Providers funds. These challenges are then compounded by the increased numbers of uninsured and underinsured patients in our region.

Tragedy In Alamogordo: 26 Year Old Wildland Firefighter Dies

ALAMOGORDO, NM – May 07, 2013 – Daniel Davidson, age 26, US Forest Service wildland firefighter on Engine 621 of the Sacramento Ranger District, passed away on Sunday afternoon. Davidson was working on a Forest Service project, with two other engine crew members near Mayhill, NM, when he suddenly collapsed. The crew members immediately attended to Davidson and began CPR. They continued CPR as the life flight helicopter mobilized to the scene. Shortly following their arrival, the helicopter’s emergency personnel determined that Davidson had passed away.

Las Cruces Senior Centers Closed On May 17

All City of Las Cruces senior centers will be closed Friday, May 17, to enable staff to attend all-day, in-service training. There will be no congregate meals that day, and home delivered meal consumers will receive a weekend meal on Thursday, May 16, in lieu of Friday’s normal delivery.  All art classes are cancelled. Cards and Chess will relocate for the day to Branigan Library, 200 E. Picacho Ave., meeting at its regular times.

NMSU Student Awarded Goldwater Scholarship

One of only two New Mexico students, Lindsay Redman, a sophomore majoring in biochemistry, has been selected as a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar for 2013, and will receive a full academic scholarship for the remainder of her undergraduate education.

"It's a big deal for me, not because I care about the money, but because it is like a ticket for graduate school and will be helpful for all the rest of the things I will apply for," Redman said.

Attorney And Veteran To Keynote WNMU Commencement

  Captain David C. Iglesias, prosecutor and spokesman with the Office of Military Commissions in Washington, D.C., will deliver the keynote address at the WNMU spring commencement ceremony on Friday.

Iglesias is a retired member of the U.S. Naval Reserve Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAGC). He was mobilized back into active duty status in 2008 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2011, he supervised the U.S. v. Noor Uthman terrorism case, one of only seven completed war crimes cases since the September 11 attacks.
