11 year olds charged in fire

Las Cruces, NM – Two 11-year-old boys have been charged with attempted arson following a Tuesday fire inside Chaparral Elementary School.

The Dona Ana County Fire and Emergency Services Department reported a call from the school just after noon.

The trash-can fire in the third-grade hallway had already been extinguished by school staff when firefighters arrived moments after the call.

No students were injured, but the building was temporarily evacuated as a safety precaution.

Las Cruces – A senate bill calling for an extension of the "Educational Retirees Return-to-Work Program" passed a key committee Wednesday. As KRWG's Eduardo Rodriguez reports, the program which allows retired educators to return to work without penalties, was scheduled to expire in three years.

Bill Banning Domestic Violence Offenders from the Police Force Passes State House

Santa Fe, NM – A bill that would keep domestic violence offenders from becoming police officers in New Mexico has passed the State House of Representatives.
The measure, sponsored by Las Cruces Democratic Representative Nathan Cote, passed the house 63 to nothing.

The bill was amended in the House Judiciary Committee to decrease the ban from lifetime to within three years of a violation.

New Digital FEMA Maps Could Force County Residents to Purchase Flood Insurance

Las Cruces, NM – Today the United States Senate passed their version of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act by a vote of 61 to 37; with the support of just three Republican Senators. Houston Chronicle Reporter Researches each American Killed in Mexico Since 2004

Las Cruces, NM – The U.S. State Department says that more than 200 American citizens have been killed in Mexico since 2004; meaning U.S. citizens suffer more unnatural deaths in Mexico than in any other foreign country excluding military combat zones. KRWG's Evan Woodward spoke with Houston Chronicle Reporter Lise Olsen about the issue; Olsen spent the last year and a half researching the deaths of each U.S. citizen killed in Mexico since 2004.
