Las Cruces – Sonoma Elementary School in Las Cruces opened its doors last week. Located just off Highway 70, the school was built to accommodate students from various overcrowded elementary schools in the surrounding area. KRWG's Lily Olivas took a tour of Sonoma with its principal at the end of its first week of school.
Hatch, NM – The Hatch community is trying to heal from this week's flooding- devastating the downtown and leaving close to 200 residents homeless. They're digging out, just in time for the Annual Hatch Chile Festival. As KRWG's Jodi Breisler reports, Hatch may be battered, but it's spirit is not broken.

Las Cruces, NM – New Mexico is ranked last in the country for pedestrian safety, so the Las Cruces Police Department is targeting the problem. As KRWG's Yasmin Pinon reports, starting this week and continuing for the rest of the summer, police will be giving out warnings and then tickets to drivers who don't yield to pedestrians.

Joined by community leaders and local Mexican representatives, de Icaza detailed his country's perspective on illegal immigration. Las Cruces, NM – The Gila National Forest is re-opening the Quemado Lake Recreation Area, after having to shut down after three black bears entered the camp grounds. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish removed the last bear on Thursday by using traps, patrols and dogs. District Ranger John Pierson, says the black bears came for the food and trash people leave behind or don't put away properly.
