Concern Over Wastewater Plant Proposal
By KRWG News
Las Cruces – A group of neighbors is coming out against a proposed $8 million wastewater treatment plant that would serve more than 5,000 customers in Dona Ana County.
The group is collecting petition signatures and has plans to post signs in opposition to what they fear will be an unsightly, environmentally unsound intrusion.
Without treating the water, the manager of the Dona Ana Mutual Domestic Water Consumers Association says the area's septic tanks and cesspools will ultimately contaminate the area's 1,200 irrigation and domestic wells.
Public meetings are planned for December, and it could take another year before bidding out the construction.
The plant's in-ground basins, a one-story lab and office will go on five acres of the 24-acre site at the end of Hope Road north of Las Cruces.
