News Brief: Las Cruces Police Department Steps Up Pedestrian Safety

Las Cruces, NM – New Mexico is ranked last in the country for pedestrian safety, so the Las Cruces Police Department is targeting the problem. Starting on August ninth and continuing for the rest of the summer, police will be giving out warnings and then tickets to drivers who don't yield to pedestrians. Plain clothed LCPD officers will be watching for both drivers and pedestrians who fail to follow traffic laws. After two weeks of warnings, officers will be giving out tickets ranging from eighty to three-hundred dollars. Officer Kiri Daines says New Mexico is notorious for pedestrian fatalities, so the federal government is funding a new program called YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS, OBEY OR PAY.
