Update: Persons Of Interest Sought In Anthony Shooting Death

Anthony, NM – Wanted for questioning are RICARDO "RICKY CASTILLO, age 26, (DOB: 04.21.1983) of Chaparral, New Mexico and JUAN CASTILLO, age 22, (DOB: 11.12.1987) of Anthony, New Mexico.

These two individuals were last seen leaving the scene of the shooting in silver, 2005, Nissan Altima, displaying New Mexico registration JZR 457.

Texas Budget Cuts

Texas – Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and House Speaker Joe Straus are asking state agencies to submit plans for reducing their budgets.

It's been less than a year since the state budget was written, but the Republican leaders appear to be preparing for prolonged state revenue declines and a tough 2011 budget-writing session.

In a letter to agency heads, the three asked for a plan to reduce expenditures by 5 percent no later than Feb. 15. They also asked departments to minimize the impact on services.

NM Royalty Earnings Flat

New Mexico – State Land Commissioner Patrick Lyons says a resurgence of oil field activity in southeastern New Mexico has improved the Land Office's second quarter lease sale revenues, but royalty earnings remain flat.

The State Land Office has collected nearly $96 million during the second quarter of this fiscal year. That brings total earnings for the first half of the fiscal year to $186 million, half of last year's mid-point earnings.

Attempted Kidnapping At Elementary

Alamogordo – Alamogordo authorities say a man has been arrested in connection with an attempted kidnapping at an elementary school.

Timothy McKearney was taken into custody Friday in Tularosa after the Alamogordo Department of Public Safety issued an arrest warrant for him.

Authorities obtained the warrant after a man in a pickup truck approached a student outside Sierra Elementary School on Thursday.

Sonic Booms May Continue Through Jan. 22

Las Cruces – Officials with the 49th Fighter Wing have announced Holloman is currently hosting an aerial exercise involving a number of aircraft. The exercise, which is taking place over portions of White Sands Missile Range airspace, will continue until Friday, Jan. 22.

NMSU Part Of $44 Million Dollar Study

Las Cruces – Researchers from New Mexico State University will join others from around the country as part of the National Alliance for Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts, a consortium of universities and research institutions awarded $44 million by the U.S. Department of Energy to commercialize algae into a biofuel. The funding is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act passed last year by Congress.

Munson Senior Center Closed Until Tuesday

Las Cruces – The City of Las Cruces Munson Senior Center has temporarily closed due to a mechanical issue. The center will remain closed throughout the weekend and reopen at 8am on Tuesday, January 19th. All weekend and evening activities, including Saturday's night dance at 7pm have been cancelled.

Richardson Gets Ideas To Save Money

New Mexico – Some state government departments should be merged and more than a dozen boards and commissions should be eliminated to save taxpayer money and make New Mexico's government more efficient.

A committee on government efficiency submitted its report and recommendations to Gov. Bill Richardson on Thursday. The governor had created the committee in an effort to find ways to streamline state operations.

Burned Body Identified

Las Cruces – State police have identified a body found in a burned out vehicle in Dona Ana County as that of a Texas man.

State police Lt. Eric Garcia says the death of 20-year-old Adam Espinoza of San Antonio is being investigated as a homicide.

Garcia says hikers stumbled upon the charred vehicle and remains late Sunday afternoon east of Anthony. They reported the discovery to the sheriff's department.

It's unclear how long the body had been in the area, but Garcia says it was likely days or weeks.

El Paso Man Arrested On Drug Charges

Deming – New Mexico authorities say a Texas man is in custody after 18 pounds of cocaine was found in the car he was driving.

The New Mexico Department of Public Safety were patrolling Interstate 10 just outside Deming on Thursday when an officers saw a vehicle commit a traffic infraction and pulled the cart over.

DPS says a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of several tightly packed bundles determined to be cocaine destined for the East Coast. The cocaine had an estimated value of $330,000.

Former Teacher/Coach Arrested On Sex Charges

Santa Teresa, NM – A former Santa Teresa teacher has been arrested on sex charges. The U.S. Marshal's office, New Mexico State Police and Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office arrested David M. Arrey, 42, of the 5700 block of Butte Dr. in Santa Teresa.

Arrey was arrested on a warrant for five counts of criminal sexual penetration in the fourth degree.

He previously coached at Santa Teresa High school and was a physical education teacher from October 2008 through May 2009.

Suspect In Three Robberies Arrested

Las Cruces – Police have arrested the man believed to be responsible for three Las Cruces robberies in the past couple of months.

Joseph Kress, 23, of 2049 S. Triviz Dr., was arrested Wednesday, Jan. 13, and is charged with three counts of robbery. Kress was transported to the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $30,000.
