Science Program to Expand

Las Cruces – A grant will help New Mexico State University expand a special program for area K-through-12 students

The Southern New Mexico Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy will be able to expand thanks to a $157 thousand dollar grant from the Toyota USA Foundation.

The academy is one of just 12 organizations around the country to receive part of Toyota's $3.3 million dollars given to support K-12 math and science education.

Voters Say Yes! to Beer and Wine

Las Cruces, NM – Restaurants in Dona Ana County's unincorporated communities will be allowed to sell beer and wine, thanks to the support of voters during Tuesday's special election. Before the election those restaurants were not allowed to apply for a liquor license according to state law; and as KRWG's Marco Grajeda reports, one restaurant owner in La Union couldn't be happier.

Teague Bill would reduce the Cost of VA Hospital Trips

Las Cruces, NM – When a veteran is sick in New Mexico, family members often have to travel hundreds of miles to the nearest Veteran Hospital, most likely in Albuquerque. The cost of that trip, including meals, hotel rooms and gas money can add up quickly, so Congressman Harry Teague is urging his colleagues to offer family members some financial assistance. NMSU Team Helps Pecan Farmers

Las Cruces – Researchers at New Mexico State University are using satellites to help pecan farmers.

NMSU won a nearly $870,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Researchers plan to study various aspects of pecan trees and how the data they gather correlates to satellite imagery.

Satellites take photos using visual, infrared and other bands of light all the time. Unfortunately, it's difficult for researchers to use those satellite images to know whether trees are stressed from a lack of water or nutrients.

Fire Crews Extinguish Blaze near Silver City

Las Cruces, NM – Fire crews suppressed a blaze near silver city Monday that threatened a number of homes and several structures at a local airport.

The fire began around two-thirty in the afternoon near the Whiskey Creek Airport, four miles east of Silver City.

Fire information officer for the New Mexico State Forestry Division, Dan Ware, says the blaze spread quickly burning more than thirty acres in just two hours.
