Bingaman backs Credit Card Reform

Albuquerque, NM – New Mexico U.S Senator Jeff Bingaman says he hopes congress will pass a bill to protect consumers from credit card companies.

The measure, known as the "Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure Act of 2009", would, among other things, force companies to notify consumers prior to raising their interest rates.

The bill would also set limits on fees and interest charges, and prohibit penalties on credit card holders who pay their bills on time.

New Mexico Court of Appeals Upholds State Cockfighting Ban

Las Cruces, NM – The New Mexico Court of Appeals decision late last week to uphold the state's 2007 ban on cockfighting was applauded by The Humane Society of the United States and Animal Protection of New Mexico. As KRWG's Evan Woodward reports, the ban was challenged by the New Mexico Gamefowl Association along with a group of business owners who claimed it violated the state constitution.

New Mexico has 44 Confirmed Cases of Swine Flu

Las Cruces, NM – The New Mexico Department of Health announced this afternoon that the state has 44 confirmed cases of the H1N1 Virus, along with 5 probable cases. As KRWG's Evan Woodward reports, only two new probable cases have been reported since Friday.

Nuclear Watchdogs pleased with proposed budget cuts

Las Cruces, NM – Some nuclear watchdogs are cautiously applauding a proposed budget released by the Obama Administration for operations at Los Alamos National Laboratory, or LANL. The budget cuts spending on a program designed to ramp up the lab's ability to produce plutonium pits, the cores of nuclear weapons. KUNM's Jim Williams reports.

Cases of Rabies Reminds Residents to Vaccinate Pets

Las Cruces, NM – A skunk in Lea County and a bat in Dona Ana County, tested positive for rabies according to health officials. The bat exposed two unvaccinated cats to the disease which now have to be euthanized. Health officials are now warning residents to vaccinate their animals and to be on the look out for wild animals with the disease.

Man Arrested after Barricading Himself with his Son

Las Cruces, NM – A Las Cruces man was arrested after allegedly attacking his girlfriend and barricading himself with his child.

At around one-thirty this morning Dona Ana county Sheriff's Deputies responded to a domestic violence call on Zeus Street.

When officers arrived they found a woman running from the home with signs of abuse. She told investigators her boyfriend, 37 year old Zachary Barela, threatened her and the entire family.

Dr. Waded Cruzado No Longer NMSU's Interim President

Las Cruces, NM – A campus wide email sent out by New Mexico State University Board of Regents Chairman Blake Cutis today announced that NMSU Interim President Dr. Waded Cruzado will be returning to her old position as Executive Vice President and Provost. As KRWG's Evan Woodward reports, a new Interim President will soon be named while the Regents move forward with another search for a permanent university President.
